The Chalice

The insignia of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a red chalice with a white St. Andrew's Cross in the upper left corner.  The chalice recalls the central place of Communion to the life of every Christian.  The cross of Saint Andrew is a reminder of the ministry of each person and the importance of evangelism, and recalls the denomination's Scottish Presbyterian ancestry.

Faithful Past  -  Promising Future

Situated at the confluence of the North and South Platte rivers, the fledging city of Noth Platte, NE was a stop along the way the Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail, Pony Express, Overland Trail and the Union Pacific Railroad.

Some 200,000 pioneers including montain trappers, farmers, prospectors, merchants and the like swept through this flat prairie land from the 1860's to the turn of the 20th century in the great western migration.

Included in this group were five veryfaithful and determined women.  Seeing the need for the Christianeducation of children and permanent place of woship theyformed a Ladies Aid Society.  At a time when oppertunities and freedoms were not readily afforded women, these ladies took the initiative, raised funds and saw the first envangelistic meeting held in August 1901 with 27 charter members.

In the decades that followed, others would take up the mantle of leadership.  At the 2007 General Assembly, recognition was made of the church's participation in the great "North Platte Canteen" during WWll that served food and friendship to more than six million members of the armed forces.

Many changes have taken place since those first days in 1901 but one thing has not.  The same passion for Christ and his church that drove its founders is still present toaday in the friendly, welcoming spirit of its people.

Little did those early church pioneers know that they began a work that has stretched for more than 100 years that echoes a faithful past and trumpets a promising future.
